For his contributions to technology and the community, he has been recognized as an Oracle ACE Director and a Java Champion.

He is passionate about working on issues plaguing the society and making a difference. He currently works closely with organizations working in the domain of promoting scientific temperament and citizen empowerment. He especially looks at how these organizations can best leverage technology. He is also the founder of nonprofit initiatives Sudhar.In & TechnoProfits.org.

The award will be given away at the 7th IndicThreads Pune Conference that is being held on 14-15 December 2012. The award will be presented on Day1 morning by Suhas Kelkar, the Chief Technology Officer (APAC) of BMC Software and the inaugural speaker at the conference.

Navin Kabra is the co-founder of ReliScore.com and Punetech.com. He is a PhD in Computer Sciences from the University of Wisconsin and a B.Tech. from IIT-Bombay

Suhas was earlier Vice President of Product Management at Digité. He has also worked for Rational Software/IBM, Serena Software, and Philips Medical Systems.

Suhas holds a MS in Robotics from the University of Florida and an MBA from the School of Business at Florida Institute of Technology.

He has led the development of CDI, Connectors and JMS integration modules in Project GlassFish, Sun Java System Application Server, and the J2EE SDK. He has been involved with Project GlassFish since inception, and has worked extensively on Java EE based distributed enterprise application design and development.

About Pune City:
Pune (Poona) is located in western India and is the 7th largest city in India. It is a three hour drive from Mumbai (formerly Bombay), the commercial capital of India.

Getting To Pune: Pune is well connected to all major cities in India. However it’s important to book early if you wish to get a good air deal. As for trains, it’s important to book early if you wish to get any reservation at all.

If you are traveling to Pune from out of India, it is most economical to take a flight to Mumbai and then get to Pune by road. Mumbai to Pune should take you about 3 hours by road. However the fastest option is to take the direct Lufthansa flight from Frankfurt to Pune.

Transport Options within the city: To travel within the city, you can use autorickshaws or the Pune Corporation run buses. The rickshaws charge you as per the meter and a distance of 2 kms would cost about Rs. 25. The city bus service is useful & functional but not the most efficient. The bus tickets are fairly cheap but you might also have to wait for long periods at the bus stops. Though there are no taxi cab stands in the city, you can book a cab through the Wings Radio Cab service by calling 40100100 or TravelTime at 66000000. The taxis are air-conditioned and comfortable to travel in. They offer 24 hour service and can be especially useful for airport pickups.

Leisure: Located close to the conference hotel are Fergusson Road and Jungli Maharaj Road which are young and happening places with many colleges, book stores, cafes, restaurants and boutiques. Museums such as the Kelkar Museum and the Mahatma Phule museum which is within walking distance from the conference venue, are also famous for their collection of artifacts. There are also numerous places for nature lovers such as the Sinhagad Fort and the Bird Santuary at Ujni Dam.

Presentation Recommendations

• Font Sizes Too Small: This is easily the most commonly encountered issue in presentations. Please use 25+ font size for all slide content. Seriously, 25+ for all content.

• Cluttered Slides: Please keep the content on each slide to a minimum ( we recommend not more than 2-3 points/lines). Slides full of text are a strict no-no for presentations. If there is need for a lot of text on the slide, that could mean that the speaker is not yet well versed with the topic. 
  

• Images Make it Interesting: Adding a lot of relevant or at times fun images can liven up your slide deck.

• No Marketing: Please ensure that there is no marketing content for any product/service/company in your slides.

Misc.

1. Do tell your real & social media friends & followers of the conference and your upcoming speaking engagement. Every little bit helps make a great event.
2. All sessions are between 60-70 minutes.
3. We recommend that you use your own laptop to present. Projector issues are common, especially for Mac & Linux devices. Please test your device prior to your presentation.
4. The hotel does not provide free Wifi. You could either buy the hotel Wifi Card or carry your USB dongles should you require to use the internet during your presentation.
5. We highly recommend that you keep backups on hand to provide for surprise technology failures.
6. We flash 5 min & TIME reminder placards from the back of the hall. Please do not take offense, it’s mere procedure so as to keep things on schedule.

• Polyglot and Functional Programming On The Java Virtual Machine (JVM)

This talk will introduce the audience with various components in Hadoop ecosystem such as HDFS, HBase, Hive, Pig, Zoopkeeper, Chukwa and Mahaout, role of each component and its application areas.

The talk will mainly focus on HDFS, HBase, Hive and Pig. It will cover design features, examples, application areas, limitations and comparison of these components and will give fair idea about how these components can be used.

In addition, it will cover few case studies covering Hadoop,usage in companies  such as Facebook, Yahoo and LinkedIn to give idea about how these components are currently being used in the field.
